The Castillo’s first collaborative project was to build an affordable home for their growing family on their seven-acre organic farm in South Kona. Inspired by the island’s iconic tin-roofed coffee shacks, they used a 400 sf tent with soaring 20 ft ceilings as the central core of their home and gradually expanded it to 1100 sf, adding three bedrooms, a corrugated metal camp-style kitchen, an open-air bathroom with solar heated hot water, an office, a laundry room and a lanai.
Their rustic yet sophisticated home has been featured on Apartment Therapy as a House Tour (see Press) and they recently won the highly coveted Remodelista 2017 Considered Design Award in the Best Living and/or Dining Space Amateurs category (see Press).
